Diary of a Novice Archer - Uncut

Introduction

It started out – as with most good ideas – as nicked off of someone else. My husband Richard writes regularly for his Company news letter thus felt he could write about his experiences of the six-week intro course for SAC's newsletter. While Richard was still mulling over doing one of his snappy intros, I'd written 2 chapters!

Originally written for publication in Stortford Archery Club's newsletter Insight, Lucy proved to be far too big in its original format. The editor politely expressed his “delight” with the number of words and pages I'd produced for the first chapter and I took the hint. I removed huge chunks of the text that would have made it more of a novel than an article about a six-session training course. I later re-read the original and decided that it was a pity to cast it aside. I added some more, changed the tense, and added a load more chapters. The thought was at the back of my mind that should I ever be successful as an archer, others might find it instructive as well as entertaining.

Is it true? More or less, it's based on the truth with my thoughts – the easiest and least likely to offend as I'm unlikely to sue myself for libel - being expanded. I don't think I was ever really that timid or that bad as a beginner, except in my own mind. The events are true, the people are real, the places exist - I originally kept a diary of what happened, and sat in on a couple more beginners courses for research purposes. Certain people's characters and comments have been embellished for dramatic effect, but that's about all.

If anyone thinks that uncut means that I'm about to expose SAC as a hotbed of lust and discontent – read on. There are only 9 chapters here, I've got another 10 awaiting the final scan and the rest will be wherever the wind takes the arrows . . .

There, that'll keep ‘em reading.
