The original Stortford Archery Club was formed in 1966, however in the early seventies it went into hibernation for a couple of years. In 1973 it took on a new lease of life and the present Club was formed. In 1975 it moved to grounds in the Herts and Essex Hospital but in order to accommodate longer distances and to avoid extensive building work an adjoining school field was used from 1981 onwards. In 1991 we moved again to the rural setting of Waterside School on the Hassobury estate, a few miles north of Bishop's Stortford. With the closure and sale of the School the Club again moved, this time to the Stansted Airport Sports and Social Club grounds. Although no indoor facilities were available there it did provide good accessible shooting. In October of 1997 the Club moved to its current location, with both indoor and outdoor facilities, at St. Mary's Catholic School at the top of Windhill. The Club shoots three times a week, with practice evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18.00 until 21.00 and Club Day on Sundays from 13.30 until 18.00. The Club has a membership of approximately seventy with a growing junior section. The standard within the Club has soared in the last few years with no fewer than five archers who have been selected to shoot for Great Britain and the number of County standard archers is in double figures. Despite this the Club exists for the enjoyment of archery by all of its members regardless of skill. We are a very sociable Club and we organise a number of social events each year such as a Christmas dinner, visits to concerts, ten pin bowling, etc. The Club organises Have-a-Go sessions at a number of local fetes each year and runs six-week beginners courses approximately every two months. The current cost is £30.00 including insurance and use of all equipment.
